Questions

As soon as medically stable — ideally within 24–48 hours of stroke. Early intensive physiotherapy significantly improves neurological recovery due to maximum early neuroplasticity.

Recovery potential is greater than commonly believed. Neuroplasticity means the brain continues adapting throughout life. Intensive, task-specific rehabilitation can achieve improvements even years after stroke.

Most stroke survivors who cannot walk on admission regain walking ability with intensive rehabilitation. The degree of recovery depends on stroke severity, location, and rehabilitation intensity and timing.

Intensity of rehabilitation. More practice leads to more brain reorganisation and better recovery. High-repetition, task-specific exercises in physiotherapy are the most powerful driver of stroke recovery.

Spasticity is increased muscle tone in the affected limbs after stroke, causing stiffness and sometimes painful muscle spasms. Treatment includes stretching, positioning, splinting, Botox injections, and physiotherapy.

Recovery is lifelong, though the fastest progress occurs in the first 3–6 months. Many patients continue to make functional gains years after stroke with consistent physiotherapy and exercise.

Providing emotional support, assisting with the home exercise programme, creating a safe home environment, and attending key therapy sessions to learn facilitation techniques all help significantly.

Stroke patients must not drive until formally assessed. A driving assessment (usually 3–6 months post-stroke if good functional recovery) is conducted by specialist occupational therapists and DVLA guidelines.
